Frequently Asked Questions
Can I join the Community Advisory Committee?
Yes! We are always looking for residents to become involved in helping develop the Strategy. The next round of Community Advisory Committee (CAC)
meetings are scheduled for May. Contact us to find out more!
What percentage of the travel market is currently serviced by DRT?
Currently DRT services about 8 percent of the travel demand in the Region. One in twelve residents travel to work, shop or play using DRT. Other urban centers with mature rapid transit systems and with comparable population densities to Pickering, Ajax and Oshawa are able to capture 20-30 percent of the
travel demand with public transit . The Regions goal is to achieve similar or greater service levels over the term of the Strategy in the urban growth centres.
Will transit planning run concurrently with Growth Planning?
As this is a long-term strategy, the emphasis will be both on filling the gaps in service that currently exist, and ensuring that as we grow, transit corridors and
routes are considered as a crucial element to industrial and residential planning and a convenient travel alternative.
Will there be partnerships with other transit authorities and other Greater Golden Horseshoe governments as a result of this strategy?
The benefit of doing this strategy is that it allows DRT to coordinate with other governments and transit authorities to discuss options, and develop long-term
partnerships to create transit systems that can move people inter-regionally. This includes building partnerships with GO Transit, York Region Transit (YRT) and
Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to determine where gaps in service need to be filled.
Will environmentally friendly fuels and technologies be used on DRT buses as a result of this strategy?
Currently our DRT bus fleet runs on clean-burning diesel using the latest clean burning engine technology. As we move ahead and acquire new buses, we will
review the options of purchasing hybrid technology and investigate emerging environmentally friendly technology. The Strategy will allow us to determine
new technologies, to allow for the most up-to-date and environmentally friendly buses for the DRT fleet of the future.
